Factbox: U.S. healthcare by numbers

(Reuters) – Healthcare, the subject of U.S. Supreme Court arguments from Monday to Wednesday, has been at the heart of a fervent political debate in the United States since long before President Barack Obama‘s overhaul became law two years ago.

Quite aside from the legal arguments are hot-button issues, ranging from the quality of healthcare to the availability of insurance.

The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ranked the health standards of its 34 members in a report last November, “Health at a Glance 2011 – OECD Indicators.” Some categories were rankings among a smaller set of countries.

The United States was ranked as follows:

First in Spending – Annual healthcare spending totals $2.6 trillion, equal to 17.9 percent of U.S. annual gross domestic product, or $8,402 for every man, woman and child.

First in Good Health Self-Assessments – 90 percent of U.S. adults aged 15 and older describe themselves as being in good health versus an OECD average of 69.1 percent.

First in Obesity – More than one-third of American adults are obese, up from 15 percent in 1980.

Second in Prevalence of Diabetes – 10.3 percent of the U.S. population suffers from diabetes, surpassed only by Mexico’s 10.8 percent. The OECD average is 6.5 percent.

Third out of nine in Waiting Time for Specialists – Out of nine countries from Europe, North America and the Antipodes, the United States has the third-shortest waiting time for specialist appointments at an average of 20 weeks; Germany and Switzerland had shorter waiting periods.

Fourth in Preventing Death from Stroke – The United States ranks behind Israel, Switzerland and France with 32 stroke-related deaths per 100,000 people.

Seventh in Cancer Incidence – Cancer afflicts more than 300 people per 100,000 in the United States, compared with an OECD average of 261.

Ninth in Preventing Death from Cancer – At 185 deaths per 100,000, the United States is behind Australia but well above an OECD average of 208.

10th in Number of Practicing Nurses – 10.8 per 1,000 population versus an OECD average of 8.4 percent.

11th of 11 in Unmet Need for Care Due to Cost – Compared with 10 European countries and Canada, the United States ranks last in its ability to provide affordable care: Thirty-nine percent of people with below-average income and 20 percent of people with above-average income reported forgoing a doctor’s visit or prescription because of the cost.

25th in Preventing Death from Heart Disease – At 129 deaths per 100,000 people, the U.S. heart disease mortality rate is worse than those in Canada and Austria and below an OECD average of 117.

27th in Life Expectancy – Americans can expect to live 78.2 years on average, below the OECD average and just behind Slovenia and Chile.

29th in Number of Practicing Doctors – The United States has 2.4 practicing doctors per 1,000 population, placing it below an OECD average of 3.1 and behind Canada and Slovenia.

29th in Doctor Consultations – At 3.9 doctor visits per capita, the United States leads only Ireland, Mexico, Sweden and Chile versus an OECD average 6.5 percent.

30th in Hospital Beds – 3.1 per 1,000 population, behind Portugal, Britain and Spain.

30th in Medical Graduates – 6.5 per 100,000 population, ahead of only France, Japan and Israel. The OECD average is 9.9 percent.

31st in Health Coverage – An estimated 81 percent of Americans are covered by private or government health insurance, placing the country fourth from last behind the Slovak Republic; 25 OECD countries cover 99 percent or more of their citizens.

31st in Infant Mortality – 6.5 babies die per thousand live births in the United States, placing the country behind the Slovak Republic and below an OECD average performance of 4.4.

31st in Preventing Premature Death – The number of years lost in the United States to premature death is surpassed only by Hungary, Mexico and Russia. The main causes for males and females are accidents, violence, cancer and circulatory disease.

(AP) ? Eight people, including a woman celebrating her 26th birthday and six young children at a family slumber party, died Saturday when fire tore through a two-story home while they slept, officials and witnesses said.

A seventh child was on life support after the blaze, the deadliest in West Virginia’s capital city in more than 60 years, Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said. The dead children ranged from 18 months to 8.

The cause was under investigation. The fire appeared to have started on the first floor of the home, Charleston Assistant Fire Chief Bob Sharp said. Jones said the home had one working smoke detector on the bottom floor, but it was on a counter and wasn’t properly mounted to a ceiling. Another was found in a basement area but didn’t work.

A children’s picnic table, chairs and an umbrella were overturned in the yard of the home, sitting on a corner in a neighborhood tightly packed with small houses. The outside of the front of the home was blackened by the flames and smoke. Two upstairs windows were shattered and blackened, and what appeared to be an opening for an upstairs air conditioner was stuffed shut with clothes.

Sharp said two of those killed were adults and all of the children who died were younger than 8. Ten people were inside the house at the time of the fire ? about 3:30 a.m.

Jones said Alisha Carter-Camp was among those killed. Neighbors say a family birthday party was held in her honor at the home Friday.

Four of the victims were 3 years old; Jeremiah Camp, Elijah Scott and two children who were only identified by their first name. The others killed included Keahna Camp, 8, Emanuel Jones, 18 months and Alex Seal, an adult whose age wasn’t available.

Bryan Timothy Camp, 7, was hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities weren’t sure how the victims were all related and how many lived full-time in the home.

“We have reason to believe that a lot of the people stayed in the house more than one night and maybe on a weekly basis,” Jones said. “These people may have had residences in other places, but a lot of people lived in this house. They were not just there for that one night.”

Roxie Means and her 14-year-old daughter, Cassie, attended a birthday party Friday for Carter-Camp, a hotel worker whose 26th birthday was Saturday. A manager at the Holiday Inn Express Charleston Civic Center said he was told Saturday that Carter-Camp had been killed.

Carter-Camp and her two children were staying with her sister at the home, Roxie Means said.

People started showing up for the party around 2 p.m. Friday and it started outside an hour later with a cookout and toasts to the birthday girl.

“They were nice people drinking a glass of wine,” Roxie Means said. “They weren’t drunk. They weren’t overdoing anything.”

Cassie Means said she had gotten to know Carter-Camp and played with her children often. Carter-Camp told her that she was planning to get married in June and move to Pittsburgh to start a new chapter in her life.

“I love the kids,” Roxie Means said. “That’s really what hurts us.”

Cassie Means said she noticed lit candles inside the home when she attended the party Friday night.

And before she left, the children wanted to know if she would be back on Saturday.

“I was telling the kids good night,” Cassie Means said. One of the children asked her, “‘Cassie, are you coming over to play with us tomorrow?’ I said, ‘yeah.’”

The child continued, “‘you promise me you’ll be here tomorrow?’” Cassie Means recalled. “I said, ‘I promise you I’ll be here when you wake up to play with you. I’ll be here right when you wake up.”

Hours later, the only adult survivor was smoking a cigarette outside, noticed the fire and came running to Means’ home and started “beating down the door,” Roxie Means said.

The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. When they went inside, they immediately came across five victims and “started realizing there were a lot of people in this house, a lot of children.”

Jones said he was devastated by the news when he got the call after the fire was reported.

“I was with my children and I just grabbed them and hugged them, because I have a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old,” he said. “I walked up there and caught a glimpse of some fatalities and it’s something that’s hard to grasp. The fact that there are (six) dead children, it’s unimaginable.”

Rusty Eaton, general manager at the Holiday Inn Express Charleston Civic Center, said Carter-Camp was one of his employees. Eaton said he was notified of her death by her mother Saturday morning.

“Everybody’s taking it pretty tough, including myself,” Eaton said. “It’s a tough thing. It’s something you hope you never have to deal with.”

He said Carter-Camp had worked at the hotel’s front desk for about six months and also helped audit financial paperwork at night. He said that she felt at ease speaking with anyone and that “you didn’t have to teach (her) personality.”

“She had one of those infectious smiles, never met a stranger. She had personality to spare,” Eaton said. “She was great with our customers, great with her co-workers. Certainly, she’ll be sorely missed by us.”

By midmorning, police had pulled the bodies out. On Saturday afternoon, police searched Carter-Camp’s vehicle still parked outside.

“She worked seven days a week, had her kids here,” Roxie Means said. “”A really nice girl. I just met her, made friends with her yesterday.”

Sharp said it was the deadliest fire in the city since seven firefighters perished in while battling a fire at a Woolworth department store in 1949.

“You can imagine how traumatizing that is to us and shocking to the community in general,” he said.

Humans began walking upright to carry scarce resources, chimp study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Most of us walk and carry items in our hands every day. These are seemingly simple activities that the majority of us don’t question. But an international team of researchers, including Brian Richmond at the George Washington University, have discovered that human bipedalism, or walking upright, may have originated millions of years ago as an adaptation to carrying scarce, high-quality resources. This latest research was published in this month’s Current Biology.

The team of researchers from the U.S., England, Japan and Portugal investigated the behavior of modern-day chimpanzees as they competed for food resources, in an effort to understand what ecological settings would lead a large ape — one that resembles the 6 million-year old ancestor we shared in common with living chimpanzees — to walk on two legs.

“These chimpanzees provide a model of the ecological conditions under which our earliest ancestors might have begun walking on two legs,” said Dr. Richmond, an author of the study and associate professor of anthropology at GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. “Something as simple as carrying — an activity we engage in every day — may have, under the right conditions, led to upright walking and set our ancestors on a path apart from other apes that ultimately led to the origin of our kind.”

The research findings suggest that chimpanzees switch to moving on two limbs instead of four in situations where they need to monopolize a resource, usually because it may not occur in plentiful supply in their habitat, making it hard for them to predict when they will see it again. Standing on two legs allows them to carry much more at one time because it frees up their hands. Over time, intense bursts of bipedal activity may have led to anatomical changes that in turn became the subject of natural selection where competition for food or other resources was strong.

Two studies were conducted by the team in Guinea. The first study was in Kyoto University’s “outdoor laboratory” in a natural clearing in Bossou Forest. Researchers allowed the wild chimpanzees access to different combinations of two different types of nut — the oil palm nut, which is naturally widely available, and the coula nut, which is not. The chimpanzees’ behavior was monitored in three situations: (a) when only oil palm nuts were available, (b) when a small number of coula nuts was available, and (c) when coula nuts were the majority available resource.

When the rare coula nuts were available only in small numbers, the chimpanzees transported more at one time. Similarly, when coula nuts were the majority resource, the chimpanzees ignored the oil palm nuts altogether. The chimpanzees regarded the coula nuts as a more highly-prized resource and competed for them more intensely.

In such high-competition settings, the frequency of cases in which the chimpanzees started moving on two legs increased by a factor of four. Not only was it obvious that bipedal movement allowed them to carry more of this precious resource, but also that they were actively trying to move as much as they could in one go by using everything available — even their mouths.

The second study, by Kimberley Hockings of Oxford Brookes University was a 14-month study of Bossou chimpanzees crop-raiding, a situation in which they have to compete for rare and unpredictable resources. Here, 35 percent of the chimpanzees’ activity involved some sort of bipedal movement, and once again, this behavior appeared to be linked to a clear attempt to carry as much as possible at one time.
